It all started with a blade, in dimly lit rooms with chinagraph pencils and rickety hand-driven winders. Film editing was originally a mechanical process which was achieved by physically cutting and splicing the film. A type of cement glue was used to join the pieces of celluloid together; later the glue was replaced with material similar to sticky tape. There were no dissolves, no effects, just cuts. And masterpieces were created.
