Preface

Mechanics is the science of the action of forces upon material bodies. It studies the behaviour of a substance subjected to external forces and its distortion as a result of the system of forces and couples acting on it. Initially, mechanics was developed for solids. It was later realized that the concepts that explained the effects of forces on a solid body did not hold true for liquids and gases. While the solid bodies stay in a distorted-equilibrium state under the force field and regain their initial shape after the forces are removed, liquids and gases deform, even with a small forces, and do not regain their original position or shape after the removal of the forces.
