APPENDIX
The enablers and derailers listed here are obviously a stereotypical subset of the complex web of key national characteristics. However, these are traits we see as having a particularly strong impact on the culture of companies from each of these countries. It is important to remember that national characteristics often are performance neutral, meaning the same trait can be an enabler in one period and a derailer in the next, or be irrelevant. The responsibility of the board and the management is to ensure that they understand the effect of characteristics that may create a performance enhancing Cultural Dynamic and recognize the ones that may lead to a dysfunctional Cultural Dynamic – and then deal with them.
