When we are faced with a stressful, embarrassing, or psychologically threatening situation—such as a performance review—our my-way mindset tends to push aside our collaborative approach in order to reduce the stress, avoid the embarrassment, and escape the threat. As noted in Figure 2.2, this mindset includes a set of governing values, assumptions, and enacting behaviors that, taken together, protect the individual from uncomfortable information and allow the person to maintain the illusion of control.
