Electrical Components

Besides wires, individual components exhibit resistance, capacitance, and inductance. These devices are called resistors, capacitors, and inductors.

Other semiconductor devices called transistors switch the current on and off. They can also amplify electrical signals (use a small voltage or current to control or modify a larger one). A circuit wires these components together to perform a useful function (e.g., a switch or amplifier).

Semiconductor Devices

Most semiconductor devices are made from silicon. Pure silicon does not conduct electrons very well. However, if a few foreign atoms are doped (implanted or diffused) into the silicon surface, that region will conduct better.
