The World Wide Web was once thought to have the greatest potential for connecting people across nations, political divides, ethnicities, genders, generations, and more. The ability to connect with others and to build communities of like-minded individuals held great promise. Inclusivity and constructive discussion were buzzwords for the new era. As the years have unfolded, however, we have seen increasing concern that the Internet has led to a deterioration in the quality of interactivity driven in part by incivility, hate speech, and trolling.
