Prior to becoming an open source project, the Enhydra development and runtime environment was developed by Internet development consultants as a platform for achieving rapid development of Web applications for a wide variety of customer requirements.
As a 100% servlet implementation, Enhydra's architecture and feature set anticipated the eventual introduction of Sun's servlet 2.2 APIs.
