The connotations of a book titled Engineering Secure Devices explains a lot about the state of many embedded systems and why the topic of this book is of such importance. There is no cutting-edge book titled Engineering Bridges That Don’t Fall Down (I checked), because it’s clear the point of a bridge is to not fall down. Engineers learn about how forces work on a bridge, how materials behave under compression and tension, and use all that knowledge to build a bridge that doesn’t fall down. But it’s inherently known that the goal of a bridge should be to not fall down. Is the goal of embedded systems to be secure? Or is it something that gets thought about after?
