ASCII character codes
ASCII stands for the American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It has become adopted as an international standard by the International Standards Organization, ISO. Virtually all devices that handle characters, such as printers and keyboards, use this code.
It is convenient to remember the ASCII codes for the characters ‘0’ to ‘9’; these are 0x30 to 0x39. Thus, it is easy to convert a 4-bit number in the range 0 to 9 to ASCII by simply logically ORing the number with 0x30.
