Level Indication
The Need for Level Indication
As noted in earlier chapters, moving-magnet (MM) cartridges do not have a wide range of output levels—about 7 dB covers almost all on the market—and so in general no gain adjustment is required or provided. There is therefore no need for an indication that the gain is wrongly set. On the other hand, the moving-coil (MC) cartridges available have a range of output levels that extends over more than 30 dB, and so gain adjustment is very much needed if a phono amplifier is to be able to cope with all of them.
