Chapter 6

Signals From Vinyl

Levels and Limitations

Cartridge Types

This chapter deals with the signal levels generated by moving-magnet (MM) cartridge inputs and how this interacts with their special loading requirements and the need for RIAA equalisation. MM cartridges have been for many years less popular than moving-coil (MC) cartridges, but seem to be staging a comeback. However it would be relatively unusual nowadays to design a phono input that accepted MM inputs only. There are several ways to design a combined MM/MC input, but the approach that gives the best results is to design an MM preamp that incorporates the RIAA equalisation and put a flat-response low-noise head amplifier in front of it to get MC inputs up to MM levels.
