Chapter 18    Growth Traps

A strategic growth opportunity arises. Sounds great, right? But be fully aware of its price tag. Businesses of every size and type seek to grow—that is axiomatic. And although in some circumstances stagnation in size can be a healthy alternative, striving for growth is as natural as the survival instinct itself. There are several ways in which growth can be achieved, of course, so as a reminder I’ll list the main ones here:

  • growth from territorial expansion
  • growth from improved market penetration
  • growth from expanded products or services
  • growth concomitant with market expansion or conversion
  • growth from price increases ...
