The changes observed in trade and investment flows between emerging and mature economies and the resulting challenges they must face are part of transitions. In other words, there are switches from one kind of political, regulatory, economic, social and/or technological organisation to another.

First, these transitions can be observed at the level of the economies in transition. These transitions are linked to the gradual transformations of centralised economies into market economies.
