The Role of Safety

As with previous chapters, make some notes of what you expect in this chapter. Write down what you feel is meant by safety. Keep that in mind as you read this chapter.

Introduction

Dysfunctional organizations are inherently unsafe. They are psychologically unsafe as well as physically unsafe. It should be apparent that any of the topics previously addressed—poor or harsh cultures, dysfunctional people—would lead to dysfunctional organizations and unsafe working conditions. The organization needs a culture based on safety, a safe working environment, and prevention programs. A safety culture would minimize the impact of dysfunctional people in the organization.
