It is vital when you start work on a documentary that you set realistic goals, put in place strong support networks, and carve out the hours to do a proper job. When this doesn’t happen the casualties are not simply to your sanity, but also to the film itself. A schedule that is too aggressive will cause you to be less creative, less thorough, and more accepting of poor-quality work. Thus, the first stage of your editing process begins before you ever look at an image or make an edit: it starts when you plan your schedule.
