In the previous chapter, we learned a lot about the physical nature of light. We explained how it is generated, how it propagates through space, how it is modulated by matter, and how it can be measured. Visible light is the basis for all displays. But it has to be “shaped” or “formed” by optics to generate useful images.
In this chapter, we will discuss the principles of optical-image generation. Because we know that light is basically electromagnetic radiation, we will recap the fundamentals of wave optics in Section 3.2.
