Some leaders build great companies through their commitment to people. Again, here are two examples, one past, one present, of leaders who can claim the word “people” as part of their brands.
Herb Kelleher, Southwest Airlines—Low Fares, Lots of Fun
Legend has it the business plan for Southwest Airlines was written on a cocktail napkin during a conversation between Herb Kelleher and Southwest Airlines cofounder Rollin King. In the 1960s, the highly regulated world of airlines was expensive; air travel was for businessmen and people with means. Southwest dared to avoid the hub-and-spoke model at large, congested airports. It forged a new business model with quick turnarounds and no meals.
