HOW TO COMMUNICATE WHEN STARTING A NEW ROLE
Cook wasn’t well known to the Golin Harris leadership team when he was brought from Los Angeles to Chicago and then made CEO a few short months later. “Suddenly I was moving from being a peer to their boss,” recalls Cook, “and I think for anybody that can be a challenging experience.” He sensed the difficulty many people had: “It is one thing to be given a title and another to earn the respect that comes with the title.”
Cook did what any smart leader would do. He sat down and talked with each leader, one-on-one. “I wanted to understand their strengths and leverage them,” he says. “Then it was a matter of convincing them the change was good for the company.”
