It’s Friday night, and you’ve just finished watching a blockbuster film at your local theater. If you’re anything like me, as soon as a movie is over, you want to talk about the movie. You discuss with your companions what you liked or didn’t like, or what scenes you found funny, sad, or scary.

People use the term scene quite often when talking about movies or books, but unless you’re a filmmaker or an English teacher, you may not know all the intricate details of what a scene actually is and how it is significant to a story. In order to tell the story of the wedding well (which should be one of your primary goals), you need to understand how a story is built, piece by piece.

In this chapter, I explore the purpose of scenes in a wedding story along with what they include. I also identify three important scenes and give you a few tips on how to photograph them.
