Introduction
The Boston Marathon bomb attack in April 2013 has been described as ‘the first atrocity to be covered in real-time for a mass audience in social media’ (BBC News, cited in Allan 2014). Bombs that exploded on the final stretch of the running event killed several and wounded hundreds of people. The ensuing investigation of the attack highlighted the changing nature of news images and mobile social media in modern society.
