Mobile photography in Tanzania

‘I’m a picture girl!’ Jane exclaims, while charging her iPhone in her car. She bought the phone in 2012 so she could take ‘nice pictures’. Similarly to most people in Tanzania, Jane does not own a camera, but she has had a mobile phone with camera since 2007. Jane likes to take pictures to preserve the memory, she explains to me, of special events or when she wears something that looks nice. Jane also takes pictures of her daughter, so she can ‘see her growing up’, including pictures of ‘every birthday’.
