Artists have traditionally sought to express themselves using a variety of media. Classes of artistic expression such as the symphony orchestra, visual arts, dance, and motion pictures each have their own subforms of materials used to forge the artworks. Within the visual arts, for example, charcoal, oil and canvas, clay, steel, and even ice have been utilized as conduits for ideas. Each of these mediums has its own possibilities, quirks, and limitations.
