Achieving breakthrough science requires brilliant people, dedication, and the proper laboratories and tools. The computer has become an essential, sophisticated laboratory tool that provides capabilities that were not possible before. One thing the computer does is enable the scientist to manage huge volumes of data. Scientists acquire data through observations, often using instruments such as radio telescopes, electron microscopes, etc., as well as by synthesizing data by computational modeling of natural phenomena that result in highly refined simulations.
