Chapter 2
Here is the road map for our upcoming journey. It takes the form of a model that we introduce shortly. We also introduce Fitzy and use his real-life journey to illustrate the otherwise abstract concepts.
We spoke earlier of Sir Geoffrey Vickers and his notion of an appreciative system—that is, one that is continually modified by experience to produce what he called a “work of art.” Whether it is art or not is up to others to decide. But the following model was not in our minds when we started building TOYFNET in 1991. It is fashioned from hindsight or appreciation. It represents what we would have done had we foresight instead.
It describes three phases:
- Creating connections
- Crafting community
- Convening a coalition
