DFM Guidelines for Product Design

This chapter lists some general guidelines for product design strategy and presents assembly strategy, fastening strategy, assembly motions, and test strategy. These strategies are important aspects of the concept/architecture phase shown in Figure 3.1.

Guidelines are not the beginning of design process and do not, alone, assure DFM, although many “DFM” books, courses, and tools are limited to that focus. There may be a temptation for Engineers to start reading this book here or for managers to tell engineers to start the design process here.
