8Clients, Control and Costs

Engagement and Collaboration

We have seen in earlier chapters that a changing climate presents very significant design challenges for the built environment. But it is our clients who ultimately decide what level of change the building they are commissioning should accommodate and how much to spend in order to achieve this.

Adaptation is an emerging issue and, as such, its relevance to different elements of our society – and thus our clients – is becoming clear at different rates. Indeed, several of the Design for Future Climate applications for funding were instigated by clients, demonstrating a growing awareness and the particular relevance of the projected changes to long-term investments such as buildings.
