Introduction

Most modern supply chains function as a large-scale complex system with feedback controls at the nerve center. Data containing information on inventory levels, shipments due out, receipts due in, and so forth are “fed back” to the control center, and algorithms calculate and place orders that guide the system toward its desired or target state.
