For a long time, what I’m calling Windows Gunk was The Problem That Had No Name. People knew that Windows got slow and weird over time, but they could never quite put their finger on what was going wrong. When Degunking Windows was first published in 2004, people said “Yeah, that’s it! It’s Gunk!”
Suddenly, everyone understood the problem with their PC, and the original Degunking Windows book became an instant sensation. It wasn’t just the name or the cover. We had dared to assemble a 12-step program to help people recover from Windows gunk, and it just worked: “Hello. My name is Windows, and I’m a gunk magnet. I need help.” We saved a lot of old PCs from the curb.
