Microsoft applications, Windows features (like Windows Defender and the Action Center), third-party software, and software that runs when you connect devices (like the iPad’s iTunes) run in the background and use system resources. Some of this is warranted; you certainly need your antivirus software to run all the time, and the Action Center is only protecting your best interests when it automatically looks for solutions to problems your computer has experienced. You keep your e-mail program and Internet Explorer open and running all the time because you want to. All of this is “good” gunk.
