Storage Tiering and SLAs

Every Service Level Agreement has a price tag attached. The point of Service Level Agreements is to spend wisely: spend more on hot data and important data, spend less on cooler, staler, less important data. We’ll ruin the punch line by cutting directly to the answer:

You will save money and/or improve service by replacing single-tier storage with two-tier storage; and either offer the same service levels with significantly lower total cost; or offer significantly better service levels at the same cost (as shown in Figure 6.1).
