As a lighting designer who has to depend on light plots for a significant amount of communication, I find it surprising that they are still wrapped up in so much anxiety for me. I am not sure if I am alone in this – I don’t generally go up to my colleagues and ask them if light plots make them anxious, but I know why I feel the way I do. A light plot is the ultimate record of how you want to design a production. It contains artistic concepts, it reflects a point of view, it has mechanical details needed to get the show in the air, and it will be the most significant record of your work that remains once the production closes.
