There are a number of theories on how to learn a new language, and I have recently learned there are also a bunch of “apps” for that as well. What I believed to be fairly settled science is that the most effective way is a variation on how you learned your first language. It is akin to the concept of semiotics, that there is a predictable meaning associated with specific signs. In language acquisition this is the concept that says we learn a word by its association with an image. We are shown an object and told a word, our brain eventually begins to produce that word when the image is seen and then moves to an understanding that the word can call forth the image.
