Part 2To the Gulf
The first segment of the loop for us meant getting from Chattanooga to the Gulf of Mexico. Since we left in winter, we needed to make the trip quickly. The route took us across the Tennessee River, down the Tenn-Tom waterway, through lower Alabama via river, and to the Gulf of Mexico.
Because of winter storms and near-flood conditions at the start of our loop, we didn’t have much of a chance to break in slowly, as some loopers do, and we faced many of these dangers alone. Our breakthrough to the warmer, protected waters of the Intracoastal Waterway boosted our confidence and lifted our spirits.
