It used to be the case that the authors of malicious code (or malware) were interested primarily in notoriety. However, those days are long gone. The reality is that somewhere along the way, beginning roughly in the very early part of the twenty-first century, a marked shift occurred in the online threat landscape. Cyber-attackers started realizing that they could potentially make serious money from their activities. With more and more people conducting transactions online, malicious code moved away from being simply malicious, and moved toward being criminal. This trend has given rise to a new form of malicious software—namely, crimeware.
