Your Presence Is a Present

Bullet Find out how to create immediacy in the online classroom

Bullet Create a community with an atmosphere conducive to learning

When you are in a face-to-face classroom, your presence is apparent as there is physicality for the students. However, in an online course, being present takes planning and dedication. Online courses require more attention to the three different relationships that occur in the course:

  • The teacher-student relationship
  • The student-student relationship
  • The student-content relationship

In an online classroom, students often complete their work by themselves and don’t recognize the presence of their teacher or their peers. Student satisfaction, perception of their experience, and the memorability of the course and the content are affected.

A few statements may help teachers understand student needs and perspectives. Students want/need their instructor to

  • Care about them as people.
  • Listen to their concerns. Often, they just need to vent. You can ask whether they just want you to listen or provide options for solutions.
  • Believe in them.
  • Teach with stories that apply to the real world or their world.
  • Support them.

This chapter can help you meet those needs.
