Acknowledgements and dedication

Conservation is a forward-looking activity, so this book is dedicated to the next generation, particularly Charlotte Evans and Freddie Feilden, who both helped me examine the ideas and hone the text. I hope that their enthusiasm for historic buildings continues to grow.

Many people have influenced or helped me in my thinking and approach to the conservation of buildings. Clearly, my uncle Bernard Feilden, who first suggested I should be an architect, has been a major influence, together with colleagues at Feilden+Mawson, particularly Keith Darby, Alan Robson and Gordon Montague.
