Depth and Transverse Resolution
3.1 Introduction
The basic formulae for the depth and transverse response of the confocal scanning optical microscope (CSOM) and the correlation microscope were introduced in Chapter 1. The construction of these microscopes was described in Chapter 2 along with a description of various types of near-field optical microscopy; without much theory. In this chapter, we shall derive the formulae for the depth and transverse resolution of the confocal scanning, interference, and near-field microscopes, discuss their limitations, and show how the resolution and efficiency are affected by factors such as lens aberrations and the pinhole size.
