Chapter 13. Sizing Systems for Databases
“How big a system do I need?”
Sun account representatives are regularly asked to prepare system configuration quotations on behalf of customers. Generating a quote is not difficult. But coming up with an accurate system sizing is extremely challenging. By “sizing” I mean deciding on the number of CPUs, the memory capacity, the number of disks and disk controllers, and the number of networks of each type to include in the configuration.
Sometimes a customer will specify exactly the configuration to be quoted. But often the account representative is expected to provide some assistance in sizing.
