6.1 Introduction

There are many ways in which objects in real life can be modelled and represented. Modelling is a word like design, which is used rather loosely, in everyday language, ranging from components or parts of machines to the construction of scale models that represent real objects. Modelling can be a much more formal activity when a scientist, engineer or architect wishes to explore the nature of some physical process or understand how to construct or operate some physical object or system (Norman et al., 1990).
