6.3.1.1 Raman Effect
Raman effect is observed during an inelastic scattering of a photon [48]. In the present context, Raman scattering from a nanodot is considered, and the process is illustrated in Figure 6.2. When a light source, typically a laser, is applied on a nanodot, a photon with energy ωi is incident upon it, and a photon with energy ωf emits from it due to scattering. The nanodot undergoes Raman effect if the energy ωf of the emitted photon is different from that of the incident one (i.e., ωi) (the case of inelastic scattering). The difference between ωi and ωf determines the type of Raman scattering. Within the context, ωf < ωi gives Stokes scattering, as illustrated in Figure 6.3a.
