Chapter 19
Connecting All Parts of a Person
In This Chapter
- Supporting clients through change
- Integrating personal parts to create a whole person
- Overcoming internal conflicts
- Placing a different frame around a situation
Whenever you hear your client say ‘Well, part of me … and another part of me …’, you have wonderful material to work with. ‘Part of me wants to be a pop star and part wants to be a plumber,’ one client says about her dream career. ‘Part of me is feeling angry and part of me is relieved,’ another client says when he loses his job. Venturing into the tensions, desires and challenges of these different parts can yield rich information and newfound self-awareness for your clients.
In this chapter, I look at ways you can identify and integrate your clients' seemingly conflicting parts, and in the process, help clients move safely through transitions, overcome the conflicts and tap into new resources.
