Chapter 5. Wide Area Networking
A wide area network (wan) is generally considered to be any network that incorporates links which are supplied by a telecommunications company (telco) of some sort. A telco might be a long distance carrier or Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC). RBOCs are the result of the AT&T split by the United States government (such as Bell South and Bell Atlantic) and are only found in the United States.
There are basically two types of circuits that can be ordered from a telecommunications provider.
Leased line—where the circuit path from point A to point Z is sold and dedicated solely to one company for the duration of the service contract.
