Describing the Functions of ARP
When data is being transferred from one network or subnet to another, routing takes place and Internet layer information is utilized (IP addresses) by the routers to perform this function. However, when data is sent within a network or subnet, routing is not required. In that case, operations happen at the frame level. In this section of the chapter, you'll look at how the Address Resolution Protocol, or ARP, does its job of identifying and placing the source and destination MAC address in the frame and why the MAC addresses (unlike the IP addresses) may change many times as the data travels across the network.
