My primary color media for costume sketches is the Pelikan transparent watercolor paint box. I have been using this product for more than 20 years with excellent results. I find the Pelikan watercolors provide fine-grain quality pigments that are easy to dissolve and apply, in addition to being highly lightproof after drying. Watercolor paints come in both transparent and opaque varieties. Transparent watercolors allow light to shine through the pigment, whereas opaque watercolors reflect light entirely off the pigment.
