Chapter 7. Understanding Change
"In a progressive country change is constant; ... change ... is inevitable."
—Benjamin Disraeli, 1804-81, British Prime Minister
The IT industry suffers from more change than most. Some of this is of the industry's own making: new technologies are introduced while older ones are slowly retired. Change also comes from the businesses that use IT: because modern businesses depend on IT, any change to the business can create change in IT departments and vice versa. Entering a new market or leaving an old one, changing processes or responding to competitors can all require IT changes.
Many of the changes in IT itself and in the business demands on IT are the result of learning. New technologies emerge as the result of learning and problem solving. The same is true in business: companies learn how markets are changing, they learn of business opportunities and they learn how to do things better. Today's constant cycle of change means business and IT are at the cutting edge of learning.
