The Sociological Canon
Sociology, as a field, a subject, and eventually an academic discipline, is one of the results of the reordering of the division of intellectual labour at the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth: that reordering which generated economics, prompted a self-conscious anthropology, stimulated an empirical history, began to define a separate psychology, produced what we now think of as a distinct study of politics, and confined philosophy. Sociology might accordingly be thought to stand in much the same relation to its canon as one or another of these other subjects.
