Glossary
BROADBAND: a general term used to describe a communication system which carries a wide frequency range so allowing for a wide range of simultaneous transmissions, e.g. cable TV, satellite and so on.
CATV: community antenna television systems usually serving entire towns or major suburbs.
CO-AXIAL CABLE: a term which refers to the copper co-axial cable which is the most common type of cable used in cable systems. Such a cable system usually requires a series of amplifiers at regular intervals to boost the signal. See also FIBRE-OPTIC CABLE (below).
COMMON CARRIER: an organisation which operates a communications service, e.g. telephones, available to the public at standard rates. The carrier has no control over content.
