The mid 1980s will probably be remembered by Belgian and Dutch media historians as a period of conflict between proponents of the new media and defenders of the old. This conflict centres, to a degree, around the use of satellites and cables for media distribution, and much of the conflict is reflected in discussions of media policy.
Many issues and themes find their way into these policy discussions: regulation of the cable, programming and services to be offered, financing of the services, relation of cablecasting to the national broadcasting system, and the influence of commercial and international forces on the existing media.
