My education in the art of writing grant applications and proposals began with not just one failure but two. As a PhD student at the University of Toronto, I applied twice for a coveted scholarship from the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada (now worth $35,000 a year) and was disappointed to find my submission was rejected both times.
