Become Strongly, Even Radically, Open to New Directions, Soft Sounds, and Faint Footsteps

I often work late into the night after my family is fast asleep and it's only me awake in the house. Often, I sit at the kitchen table where all is quiet. I have a beautiful office to study and work in, but late at night I prefer the kitchen table because the presence of my family can be felt there. That kitchen table is the core of my family's existence. I feel surrounded and supported by the cocoon of their love, but I don't actually have to endure the noise they make bustling all around me as they would during the day. So sitting at the kitchen table at night, I get the best of both worlds.

An experience I have over and over is that I will be sitting there at the kitchen table, deep in my work, when suddenly I notice the refrigerator cycle on. The compressor kicks on and it clicks away and hums in the background. It isn't terribly loud, but it can be terribly distracting when it is so quiet in the house. However, I have never noticed the refrigerator running during the daytime. I know it runs during the day, but I never hear it. You have probably had this experience as well. Everyone has. Why is it that we hear the refrigerator working only at night? Because the house is loud during the day and all the other noise around you, the hustle and bustle of your family, blocks out the soft hum of the refrigerator and other appliances.
